KZN Annual Luncheon Report on 17 September 2016

On Saturday 17 September 2016, a cold front of mammoth proportions hit Durban, followed by the concomitant icy temperatures, and equally icy rain.

16 Collegiate OGs braved this, to share a delightful lunch in the community hall at the lovely Kew Gardens Retirement complex in Westville. OG Hillary Jordaan (McInnes - 1957) who is not only a home-owner in this complex, but also a trustee, arranged for us to use the hall. Hillary and Deirdre Morris (Gates – 1967) arranged everything, and the lunch table was beautifully decorated in blue and white. The caterer used by the complex provided us with a pate starter, and THE most delicious lasagna. Hillary treated us to her heavenly homemade strawberry ice-cream and fresh strawberries. My beer bread and 10 ingredients mixed salad added extras to the meal. The OGs brought their own liquid refreshment.

We all stood for a moment of silence remembering our fellow OGs who had passed away, followed by Robin Brown (Kemlo – 1947) eloquently reading the Founders’ reading and proposing the toast to Collegiate. After this we heartily sang our school’s “Girls of the College”. Messages from our Principal, Melita Bagshaw and OCGG Deputy President, Pat Bransby were read, followed by a very special table grace said by Moira Longe (Killeen - 1984). We all found it hard to believe that our beautiful ‘new’ Collegiate is 50 years old. Both messages were most interesting, and enjoyed by all the OGs.

I received apologies from 17 OGs, as well as Melita, Gill Robinson, Pat, Arwen Oberholzer (OCGG President) and Gaynor Berry. The Pietermaritzburg, Howick and Midlands OGs couldn’t attend, due to the ever popular Hilton Festival on the same day.

Every one enjoyed having our annual luncheon in such pleasant surroundings, and as this was such a suitable venue for our annual luncheons, we have asked Hillary to please enquire whether this will be possible.

A big vote of thanks was expressed to Hillary and Deirdre for all their hard work, and thoughtfulness to ensure a happy day together.

We had OGs dating from 1947 (Robin Kemlo) to 1984 (Moira Longe), and had a wonderful day of reminiscing, catching up and strengthening the common bonds of having had the privilege to be part of our beloved school, - COLLEGIATE.

Best wishes.

KZN OCGG Branch Reunion Lunch 2015

On Saturday the 15th August 2015, Nicky Armstrong (Kannemeyer, 1955) managed to arrange, at short notice, a lunch time gathering for 14 Old Collegiate Girls at the “Chez Nous” Restaurant in Westville.  The management was most obliging in billing everyone separately, which went a long way in simplifying matters.

Large posters of the Collegiate crest on the wall behind the table left no one in doubt about who was having a lunchtime reunion.  Robin Brown (Kemlo, 1947) was asked to read the well known passage from Philipians chapter 4, “Whatsoever things ........,” after which the school song was sung so lustily that it elicited a round of applause from the other diners in the restaurant!

There was time for various report backs about the Founders’ Day, the schools and friends from Collegiate days before everyone tucked into lunch and general chit chat. Thanks go to Nicky for all her hard work in keeping the KZN OCGG branch afloat.  Hopefully, the lunches will be advertised on and Facebook  in future so that more ladies can be reached in good time to also attend the lunch.
