Miss Brock and her Family by Barbara Stromberg (Haslop, 1941)

“....Collegiate has always been a very special part of my life. Because I lived in Port Elizabeth for many years and particularly during the period that the new school was being built, I have been fortunate to remain in contact with many of my contemporaries as well as other Old Girls. I have many happy memories of fund raising efforts during that time and of our charity support for the Oceana tea room at the Oceanarium.

My dear friend Pam Shapiro sent me the enclosed with reference to Miss Brock who was my headmistress at both Junior and Senior Schools. I thought it might be of interest to include it in a future newsletter...”

... “ The Brocks were/are an interesting family. Granpa was a doctor for the building of the railways in Kenya & 2 of his kids were the first white kids born in Kenya. Of his kids, one, a CofE nun, became head of the Grahamstown Training College, one, head of your old school & the boy, a Cape Rhodes’s scholar, became dean of Capetown University Medical School, where i got to know him and his 2 older children – a girl and a boy. The two boys both became Bishop’s Rhodes’s scholars. The older boy, David, was a classmate of mine, he died of cancer. The younger boy, John, now lives here & I have gotten to know him through the family history centre & promptly got him on staff...”
