Old girl, Jenny Rump, named the Herald General Motors Citizen of the Year

From The Herald,  Monday October 26, 2009:

Her role as one of Earth's custodians has earned Jenny Rump this year's The Herald General Motors Citizen of the Year title. Her passion for people and the environment, she said, were the driving forces in her life and the work she did.

Rump started her environmental work in the 70's, when she became a member of the Zwartkops Trust. She was also involved with the Aloes community that lived on the banks of the Swartkops River. She also became involved in clean-ups, or “trash bashes”, with the children. A teacher by profession and a Lifeline counsellor, Rump said she loved teaching and working with pupils.

Winning the award has given Rump “a different feeling because I did not think what I do is wonderful. The award has reaffirmed what I believe in…[it is] just the beginning of greater things I’m hoping to achieve.” One of those is seeing the Motherwell Buy-Back Centre being built and more funding being injected into the project. When she is not busy, Rump takes walks on the beach, does aqua aerobics and watches art movies, “I’m involved in church. I counsel at Lifeline. I also read when I have time and I love exploring.”
